History & Background of the Program

The Wellness Inventory is based on the pioneering work of John W. Travis, MD, MPH, recognized as a key founder of the wellness movement.

While completing his preventive medicine residency at John's Hopkins and working with the National Public Health Service, he was a protégé of Dr. Lewis Robbins, creator of the Health Risk Appraisal, and worked on the first computerized HRA for the CDC.

In 1972 he developing his seminal and influential Illness-Wellness Continuum, which became a hallmark of the wellness movement and later appeared in numerous nursing and health promotion textbooks.

In the early 1970s influenced by the pioneering work of Halbert Dunn, MD, PhD, the grandfather of the wellness movement and author of High-Level Wellness (1961), he chose to focus his work on supporting people in creating wellness in their lives rather than treating patients.

He opened the first wellness center in the US in 1975 (Wellness Resource Center) and created the first wellness assessment (Wellness Inventory) as a whole person intake for the center. Their facilitation model for working with clients at the center was a forerunner of the coaching model.

His pioneering work at the Wellness Resource Center in working with helping professionals to help prevent or alleivate caregiver burnout, was later shared in his book Wellness for Helping Professionals: Creating Compassionate Cultures, co-authored by Meryn Callander (Wellness Associates Publications, 1990).

Dr. Travis was featured in a 60 Minutes interview with Dan Rather in 1979 which explored his role in the emerging wellness movement.

Dr. Travis authored the classic Wellness Workbook (Celestial Arts, 1981, 2004, 3rd Ed) which has been used by wellness and health promotion educators in universities and in nursing schools for over thirty-five years.
